This article is dealt with the biography of Stanislaus Pinas Ely who played a significant role both in the development of Russian medicine and in the history of Russian Freemasonry. His biography is a sample of the biography of a Jew of modern times: an intellectual, a scientist, a cosmopolitan and a patriot. This article is based on previously unknown archival sources.
